Join KBS for Shabbat services with a special guest speaker this Saturday July 28th at 10:30AM at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St, Kailua Kona 96740.
Una Greenaway & Aviva Plaut lead services with Vic Greenspan and Aviva reading from Torah parashat Va’etchanan (Deuteronomy 5:1-6:25). Vic provides this summary: “With Va’etchanan we enter the last book of the Torah, D’varim or Deuteronomy. Vaetchanan means “I pleaded.” It starts with Moses pleading with Ha-Shem to be allowed to enter the promised land. Ha-Shem says no, the strength and the power are passing to Joshua. Then follows Moses’ Discourses. Moses pleads with Israel. He promises, warns and reminds us who we are and where we’ve been. He charges Israel with cherishing what we’ve been given and passing it into the future. Our Triennial section starts with a repetition of the Ten Commandments and also includes the Shema and the v’Ahavta.”
Our guest speaker this shabbat is 96-year-old Kona resident and Holocaust survivor Goldie Lefkowitz who will share her vivid recollections of growing up in Germany as the Nazis rose to power and how her family escaped on the eve of Kristallnacht.
Following services stay for kiddush and kibbitz at a potluck oneg. If you can, please bring a dish to share, but no pork or shellfish. Members and visitors are always welcome.
