The High Holidays begin with Rosh Hashanah on the evening ofWednesday, September 20th and there are several Big Island bakers who can provide round challah loaves for your festive yomtov table.

I talked to Pam Harsh, who sells her bread in the Farmers Market at Pukalani Stables Paniolo Heritage Center in Waimea on Wednesdays and Saturdays. She bakes lovely challah from organic grains and can make round ones for next Wednesday.  She says it is best to order ahead: 970-539-5444
The Sandwich Isle Bread company in Waimea will make challah to order. Phone Kevin: 989-5655
Mamane Street Bakery in Waimea also makes challah by request and can bring the loaves to several Kona area Farmers Markets at which they have sales booths. Call 885-7441
Hilo resident Orit Tashman advertises on Facebook that she makes round challah loaves and organic chicken soup with matzo balls, available for pickup in Hilo. Call 310-650-9970
Please let me know if you have other suggestions for places to purchase traditional foods for the holidays.
