In the late 1990s WaKoBeS (Wahines of Kona Beth Shalom) president Karen Brier and her husband Morty (ז״ל), vice-president of the congregation, produced The Shaloha Cookbook for the sole purpose of raising money for the Kona Beth Shalom Building Fund to further our dream of having a small Synagogue and Jewish Community Center on the Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. On each page there’s a tasty recipe plus a little story or joke from members and friends of the congregation. Selling out the first edition quickly, it was republished in a Millennium Edition that was featured in the Dining and Wine section of the New York Times on Feb. 5, 2003.
