This week’s parashah, Sh’mot/שְׁמוֹת — (“names”) Exodus 1:1 – 6:1, begins the second book of the Torah with the introduction of Moses:
- The new Egyptian Pharaoh enslaves the Hebrews and orders their male children to be drowned in the Nile
- To save her son, a Levite woman places him in a basket on the Nile where he is found by the daughter of Pharaoh. She names the child Moses and and raises him in the royal household
- As a young man, Moses sees an Egyptian overseer beat a Hebrew slave. He kills the Egyptian and flees to Midian where he marries Zipporah and lives as a shepherd
- God calls to Moses from a burning bush and instructs him to demand Pharaoh free the Israelites
